“America surprise us, let a black man guide us”—Nas
I love Obama. I really do. I know he’s not living up to his promise. I know I’m not being radical enough. But I just don’t care. Maybe it’s like Rosa Sparks says: after living with Bush II for all those horrible, humiliating years I am simply overjoyed to have a President with thoughts. And maybe there’s always something particularly unreal, or hyperreal, about Presidents—I remember thinking as a kid that Ronald Reagan talked like a Muppet, and God knows Dubya was a parody of himself. Like Brits who dream of the Queen, we are all focusing tremendous amounts of psychic energy on these men, and their images expand to fill our entire culture. But Obama is special. Smart. Handsome. Funny. Historic. And pro-gay marriage.
